With lenses such as this from other manufactures you can expect to be carrying around a much heavier lens. Canon has realized this and developed this lens to be much lighter allowing it to become more portable and easier to use. At just 13.8 ounces or 400 grams it will not be a burden to carry this lens around. Also as the lens is essentially two lenses in one you will not have to carry around 2 different lenses to get the different focal ranges.
